Feeling a bit philosophical today … We all have choice. Sometimes we don’t like the consequences of what we choose, but as they say: suffering is resistance to what is. Personally, I have had plenty of opportunities recently to fully surrender to the discomfort of making some poor choices. Luckily I can remain objective and realize it is all a lesson … what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Ok … then I am as strong as an ox right about now. I realize everything is an illusion and changes in a flash. I was having a discussion with some friends this past weekend about hope vs. faith: that it is better to have faith rather than hope. I found something Lauren Gorgo wrote in her Spirit Library which explained it succinctly to me: “Essentially, hope is a derivative of lack…of not-having, but wanting…of incompleteness…and it simply cannot be upheld in the higher frequencies of wholeness. Where we are going, hope is transformed into knowing and peace comes with presence when we are in full acceptance of what is, without wanting anything to be different. This is the ultimate state of surrender, and the one that is required to pass go.” Okay … I surrender … do with me what you will Universe! I know everything is cyclical … and I am trying to be very patient! Really, I am … but it is NOW time for me to receive my abundance in all things …

The other day, while meditating, I happened to be thinking about the people of Haiti and their current strife with not having access to food and being hungry. A thought popped into my head about a very easy way to help which was tied to my past experiences and teachings with the Blackfeet & the Lakota. Let me explain . . .

At certain times in any one’s life, we all face uncertaintees and “forks in the road”, and we search out to find answers to those pressing questions and situatoins. One of the ways that native americans go about finding their truth is to do a Hunbleceya, or what is commonly known as a Vision Quest. This vision quest involves being put up on a sacred mountain, with no water and no food, from anywhere to 1 to 4 days. There, amongst other things, they will pray to Creator for guidance.

I have been blessed to be a helper at some of these Vision Quests. A helper would help in any way they could for the person going through the Vision Quest, with the excpeption of making physical and eye contact with that person. Ways to help included prayer, drinking water (very important) and . . . eating. Yes, I said drinking and eating. Since the person going through the Vision Quest was not allowed to eat or drink, in order to provide that person with the strength to go through 4 enduring days, the helpers were instructed to eat and drink for that person. This involved being very present when eating and drinking, and to eat and drink with the intent of nourishing the Vision Quester.

Many times when a person came down from the mountain, he/she would ask “Who was eating strawberries? They were delicious! Thank you!” It is all about our intent and being present when eating and drinking. So I ask all of you, when you eat your breakfast, lunch and dinner in the coming days, center yourself and ask your guides to send the nourishing energies of the food that you are eating, and the liquids that you are drinking, to the people and animals of Haiti. Be very present when eating with the intent and the knowledge that this occurring.

I know that this may not fill the hunger and thirst void completely for those starving in Haiti, but it may very well be enough to have them hold on until the food supplies can get to them. So if you are not in the position to send money, clothing or food, or if you are not an experienced healer to send energy healing, you can still send love and nourishment. Just food for thought . . . pun intended

A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee…author unknown
You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.
A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up, She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.
Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans . She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.
In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, “Tell me what you see.”
“Carrots, eggs, and coffee,” she replied.
Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.
Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked, “What does it mean, mother?”
Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak . The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they
had changed the water.
“Which are you?” she asked her daughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?”
Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?
Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?
Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?
May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.
The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can’t go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.
When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

CHINESE PROVERBS AND SAYINGS are thousands of years old. They express the obvious truth and offer advice, and these are from The Warmth Modern Dictionary.
I drink tea and forget the world’s noises.
If you don’t want others to know about it, then don’t do it.
Reading thousands of volumes of books cannot compare to traveling thousands of miles of road.
A man must bear the consequences of his own actions. One should answer for what he does himself.
A storm may arise from a clear sky; something unexpected may happen at any time.
Friendships multiply joys, and divide griefs.
A good companion on the road makes the long journey shorter.
If you stand straight, do not fear a crooked shadow.
Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
When the water subsides the rocks emerge; the whole thing comes to light.
Cross a river in the same boat peacefully; people in the same boat help each other.
Dripping water wears through rock; constant effort brings success.
Heaven never seals off all the exists; there is always a way out.
Don’t seek water when you are a fish in the water. Don’t look for the mountain when you are walking on it.
If the rice is not cooked, do not open the lid. If the egg has not hatched, do not crack it open.
A thousand miles journey is started by taking the first step.
Arrogance invites harm, humility begets benefits.
Don’t be concerned with your position, but rather, place your concerns on whether you have set your goals properly.
Heavenly help or help from others is no match for self-help.
Rumors stop at the wise person.
Control your emotion, or it will control you.
A loss may turn out to be a blessing.
When a man is near death, he speaks from his heart.
Different people look at a thing in different ways.
The wheel of Feng Shui (or wind and water) turns constantly. Thus, neither good Feng Shui (good fortune) nor bad Feng Shui (misfortune) lasts forever.
An error the breadth of a single hair can lead you a thousand of miles astray.
Good courage breaks bad luck.
A wise man is always a good listener.

The Present Moment — Here is a story I discovered about the present moment - I would like to share. Enjoy!

There was once a king who decided that if he knew who the most important people to be with were, and what the most important thing to do was, and when the best time to do each thing was, that he would certainly be the finest king ever to rule the land.
Although he had asked his advisers, none had been able to give him a good answer to these questions.

At last he decided to ask the advice of a wise hermit.
The king dressed in the clothes of a commoner and set out for the forest.
When he neared the hermit’s hut, he ordered his knights to stay back at a distance, and he rode the last section of trail alone.

The king found the hermit digging in his garden.
The old man greeted him but continued digging.
The king told the hermit that he had come to find answers to his three questions.
The hermit listened but gave no answer and continued working.
The king observed that the hermit was frail and elderly and that the work was very difficult for him.
The king offered to take over the digging, and the hermit allowed it.

The king dug for one hour.
Then he repeated the question, but the hermit did not answer.
He worked again for another hour, and then repeated his questions with the same results.
This continued for a few more hours until the sun began to sink low in the sky.
Finally the king got discouraged. “I came to you for answers wise man. If you have none, tell me and I will return home.”

Just them someone came running up the path.
They turned to see a man with his hands pressed to his stomach and blood flowing from between them.
He dropped to the ground at the king’s feet.

The king and the hermit knelt down and began tending to the man.
The king washed and bandaged the man’s wounds.
The blood continued to flow so he had to change the bandages.
The king also helped the hermit to get fresh water, and to help the man to drink.

Finally the man slept and did not wake until the next morning.
The king too slept upon the ground, waking often to watch over the man.
In the morning the man woke up and looked at the king.

“Forgive me,” he said to the king.

“You have nothing to forgive me for,” the king answered.

“Oh, but I do,” he said. “You were my enemy, and I had sworn to take revenge on you for killing my brother and taking my land. I knew that you were coming here today and I decided to kill you on the trail. But when you did not return for many hours I left my hideout to find you. Your guards recognized me and wounded me. I escaped them but I would have bled to death if you had not cared for me. I meant to kill you but now you have saved my life. If I live I shall gladly serve you for the rest of my days.”

The king was so happy to have been reconciled with an old enemy that he immediately forgave him and promised to return his land.
Then the king called for his knights to carry the man back to his castle to be cared for by his own doctor.

After the wounded man had gone, the king asked the hermit once more if he would not give him the answer to his question.

“Your questions have already been answered.” the hermit replied.

“But how?” the king answered, perplexed.

“How?” repeated the hermit.

“If you had not taken pity on my weakness yesterday and helped me instead of returning home, that man would have ambushed and killed you on the trail. Therefore, the most important time was when you were digging my garden beds; and I was the most important person; and the most important thing to do was
to do good for me. Later, when the man came running to us, the most important thing to do was to care for him. If you had not bound up his wounds he would have died without making peace with you. Therefore the most important person was that man, and what you did was the most important thing and the right time was the time when you were doing it. ”

“You see, the most important time is always the present moment. It is the only time that is important because it is the only time that we have control over. The past we can only look back on and wish that we had done differently. The future we can only imagine. The most important person is always the one you are with in the present moment, and the only important deed is the deed that does what is best for others.”
